crates

For the past twenty-five years I’ve made crates out of found materials, echoing the construction of my sculpture. Making a secure container for both storage and transportation is the last step after I’ve finished a piece. The materials I’ve used include scrap wood, scavenged cardboard, and discarded metal signage. The crates are usually animated by stickers—either ones I find or are sent by friends, relatives, and colleagues. Unlike the art-making process that is fraught with anxiety, fabricating a crate is both diverting and liberating. The crate becomes a celebratory punctuation signaling the completion of a work.
